So I finally got around to doing my taxes today. I made so little money last year that not only do I get all of my income tax back, I also get all of my social security tax back. And an earned income credit for being so poor. A couple weeks from now, I'll be receiving a $900 bonus payday, which is spurious to all of my budgeting concerns.

I'll probably spend some here and some there. New backpack, new shoes. My computer needs some upgrades. And there's always debt that can be paid down.

I was also thinking about scoring some Lego. I was thinking that maybe Fire Brigade and Grand Emporium would be good ideas. That's about $300, and they both appear to be really great sets. But, of course, my mind isn't made up yet. If you have any advice, speak freely.

The Fire Brigade seems to have been recieved a bit critically since the Emporium came out (is it a higher price per part?), but personally those are the two large sets I'd get

Grand Emporium:
$149.99, 2182 pieces

Fire Brigade:
$149.99, 2231 pieces

Fire Brigade seems to be the better deal, in parts per dollar. But based on comments I read at TBB back when Fire Brigade first came out, it just wasn't the type of building that people were expecting. Grand Emporium is more in line with community expectations. Style counts for a lot, I guess. Personally, I think every good city ought to have some of each, old and new buildings. And that Fire Brigade is just begging to be turned into a Ghostbusters building.

So you're not going to buy a car to replace the one that "died"?

Well, there's that too. $900 certainly won't get me a new one, or fix the old one, though. At this point, my options are either finance or go without. Either way, I think I can spare a little Lego money.

I would buy the Grand Emporium it looks nice and has a lot of potential, I am not keen on the CC Fire Brigade as it's an American style station and my building needs are more Euro centric, after that pay bills and put some aside for a new vehicle.

I'm biased as I think the modular buildings are the duck's guts (thats a good thing).

I quite enjoyed the FS build, but it's the only modular that I definately won't need for my personal layout, having said that its a great parts pack. The only critism I could make in that respect is that it has a bunch of fire minifigs and only one civilian. My problem with it is that it's so iconicaly American that it doesn't fit in my European layout. It has a great amount of dark red and light bley and some interesting techniques and a heap of dark tan, and lots of tiles, and heaps of windows. I'll probably use most of its parts to make a victorian building, maybe reserving the dark red for something else.

The grand emporium looks awesome, I'd like three please Smile

Then I will live in an incomplete house.

Bar from the hint of Squidy being the next villain,(which is totally Bogus, he was set up, This is police brutality that he was locked in an isolation tube in a prison on a remote planet that only holds 3 prisoners, OUTRAGE) I was not too impressed

Not to kill the buzz, but just put it all into debts you have to pay off.
Think of it this way:
It wasn't money you were exactly planning on getting right?
Debts incur interest charges, so by deciding to spend your money on something other than reducing your debt, you're also deciding to give some money to the bank, a little later down the road.
Sorry to sound like a dad, but I can't stand knowing money is going to a bank (any bank) when it doesn't have to Smile

That's one way to look at it, Norm, and I have certainly considered it. But I have also considered that this might be my one and only chance to own the Fire Brigade and Grand Empornium*. Which is potentially pretty important. I've already missed out on a lot of things in life - sex with Britney Spears before she became a dirty whore, for example. This might not be on that same level - but then again, who knows?

*fun typo, left it in

Well wouldn't it be better to do it these days, as she would probably not object to some of the nasty skanky things you would like to do to her Twisted Evil, plus the added bonus of she is well trained from her image being stained Wink
