Again, they apparently didn't have to push very hard. The fact that your politicians don't share your concerns is not the US government or military's fault in any way.

Well given that you can put up a reasonable argument that the CIA helped in the downfall of our last government that opposed US interests, I'd argue that it is actually The US governments fault. (Not that I actually believe it was a CIA plot but the argument can certainly be made that they were not helping).
Add that to fact that our "Free Trade" agreement seems to have been tied to our involvement in the invasion of Iraq, and the US government and military seem to be a bunch of coersive arseholes. Part of the reason a lot of the world gets the shits up with the US is that for most of the world there is pressure to at least be seen to behave in a civilised manor to other nations, but if you're the biggest bully in the school yard you can choose to ignore that. |

You guys make it sound like saying no to an arms deal would lead directly to a US invasion of Australia. And I refuse to believe that's true. Now, I'm sure that the US has been aggressive in their "marketing" tactics. And I'm sure that there's both spoken and unspoken needs/desires to go along with certain aspects of US-led policy initiatives. But make no mistake - somebody in Australia is better off because of the deal. Maybe that person deserves a little bit of blame too. _________________ "We are the mustaches The Beatles grew when they dropped acid" - BHG |

Andrew Peacock was the Golden boy of the Australian Liberal party and was leader of it back in the 1980s, the "TOORAK KID" was a very charasmatic figure in the party, funny that he retired from Boeing not long after the deal was made I dare say he got a very nice Golden Handshake as he walked out the door. Given the fact the Federal election was looming the Liberal party probably got a sizable "donation" for the war chest, BAe is not the only one to use brown paper bags when doing defence deals .
Another issue is during the negotiations for the AUSFTA the AUSFTA Medicines Working Group was reported to be working for US negotiators who were pushing for the scrapping of the PBS (Pharmaceutical Benifits Scheme) just so cunts like Rumsfeld, Cheney and their cronies could make more money. The PBS run by the government subsidises the cost of medicines for the Australian public, if it was scrapped as the US wanted we would be paying prices similar too US citizens. Pretty funny watching Sicko how Cubans were paying $0.60 US for Asthma puffers and that a similar product would cost $125.00 in the US, just shows you how well capitalism works . _________________ OH FUCK WHAT HAVE I DONE WRONG AGAIN !!!
